The horticulture world has gone through many changes in the last fifty years, but one characteristic remains constant, the hype of new plant introductions. Gardeners and designers each year shop early for the newest cultivars, giving them bragging rights to fiends and clients. It has become a time honored tradition. Some of these introductions live up to the hype and rise in popularity until they achieve rock star status. Lost in the promotion and competition for the consumer dollar though, there are other worthy plants with much to offer the garden. These are the true gems of the garden, the proven performers that have stood the test of time, good old friends who visit on a regular basis with their cheery faces or flush foliage. Next week on July 27th, the designers of Garden Designers Roundtable will introduce you, and in some instances re-introduce you, to these oft forgotten treasures. I hope you will join us as we get to know a few ‘Underutilized plants’.
