To enclose or not to enclose, that is the question…

With all apologies to The Bard, today on Garden Designers Roundtable, our designers offer their thoughts on whether to enclosure a space, and create intimacy and security, or to expose a space and borrow from the surrounding landscape, possibly creating a sense of awe.

There is a fascinating book out there entitled “The
Biophilia Hypothesis” that discusses the difference between ancient history and how it affects the psyches of men versus women with regard to landscapes. Men traditionally like vistas and extended views because they were the hunters, while women traditionally like enclosed spaces because they were nurturers and shelter was important. The authors suggest that this is something we hold in our psychological gene history. So it may have as much to do with our childhood experiences when dealing with our gut reaction to design.
Lovely picture!
